Family members (residents) at Gibraltar Nursing Home recently gathered in the home’s much-loved Pillars Restaurant to celebrate National Pizza Day with an Italian-themed pizza party. For the celebration, the restaurant was decorated in the colours of the Italian flag, with green, white and red bunting, flags and balloons creating a vibrant atmosphere. There were also fun chef hats, which many family members chose to wear, bringing plenty of laughter to the afternoon.

Kathleen enjoyed wearing her chefs hat during the Italian-themed party!
The kitchen team had prepared fresh pizza dough before the party, which was brought out to the tables on trays. Family members then shaped their bases themselves whichever way they wanted to. Some used traditional rolling pins, others used adapted one-handed rolling pins, particularly supportive for those with limited mobility, and some shaped their dough with their hands. Gloves were worn for hygiene purposes as the pizzas were being shared.

The team supported family members when they needed an extra hand to work the dough.
The kitchen team then handed out bowls of chopped toppings, giving everyone a wide choice of ingredients to choose from. Each family member spooned passata onto their base before selecting and placing toppings where they wanted them. Margaret was particularly fond of the olives and covered her entire pizza with them!
As the pizzas cooked, family members continued chatting, listening to Italian music and enjoying the atmosphere together.

Once ready, the pizzas were served in classic takeaway-style boxes, adding to the fun of the experience and to evoke a sense of familiarity and positive feelings of picking up a special takeaway dinner as a treat. Some chose to eat together, while others took their boxes back to their household’s lounges or to the comfort of their own bedrooms.
Home Manager Verity shared, ‘There was plenty of fun and laughter – I’ll admit it was a very loud session! But that’s exactly what we hoped for. It was wonderful to see everyone chatting, making their own choices and enjoying something a little different together. And the chef hats are always great fun.’
Gibraltar’s Pillars Restaurant is a dedicated space within the home, designed to offer family members a slightly different dining setting where relatives are warmly invited to join them for meals and special occasions.
