There was a real sense of accomplishment, and more than a few smiles at Thistle Court Care Home, as the team received their latest inspection report from Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW).

Following its inspection between 12 and 15 January 2026, the home has been rated ‘Good’ in all four areas: Well-being, Care & Support, Environment and Leadership & Management. CIW found that people living at Thistle Court appear relaxed, settled and supported within a culture that promotes dignity, respect and everyday choice. Personal plans clearly reflect peoples’ social histories, preferences and wishes, and are reviewed regularly to ensure care remains responsive as needs change. Inspectors observed warm and familiar interactions between the team and the people they support. One person shared, “The team are great” and “they are there when I need them.”

The environment was described as homely, welcoming and calm. Bedrooms are personalised with people’s own possessions, reinforcing identity and belonging. Ongoing refurbishment has continued to strengthen the home’s dementia-friendly design, building on its much-loved high street theme. What began with a bakery, flower shop, bus stop, and more. has plans underway to introduce a library, a greengrocer, a pub. These areas are designed with interactive objects, familiar props and subtle scents to support orientation, reminiscence and encourage meaningful engagement.

The home also retained its Food Hygiene Rating of 5 (Very Good) in January 2026. Continued investment in the kitchen environment supports strengthening standards, with recent improvements including new ceilings, fire door upgrades to ensure safety and quality are maintained.

Home Manager Sarah Butfield said: “We’re so pleased with this outcome. It reflects the care, commitment and consistency our team bring every single day. Our focus is always on the person, their history, their preferences and what makes them feel at home. The rating is important, but what matters most to us is that people feel safe, respected and truly valued.”

To mark the achievement, the team voted to hold an 80s and 90s themed celebration at the local Village Hall. A second celebration will also take place in the home to ensure team and family members who are unable to attend are included.
