A day of Easter activities at Thistle Court Care Home in Cwmbran brought together everyday moments, community connections and a few unexpected visitors, as part of celebrations that will continue in the lead up to Easter.

The day began with an Easter egg hunt across the home, where clues guided people from one room to the next. Easter eggs were hidden throughout the home, creating a sense of curiosity as people followed the trail together. Alongside the hunt, there were quieter activities including Easter colouring and mask making, offering different ways for people to take part.

For many of the people living at the home, including those navigating memory changes, experiences like this are often shaped by how accessible and familiar they feel. Activities were set up so people could take part in their own way, whether that meant following the clues, joining in for a short time, or simply sitting and watching.

Later in the day, the home welcomed back a visit from Bedrock Alpacas, led by Steve, who brought two alpacas, Tolly and Murphy, along with a pony named Max. Known for their calm and gentle nature, the animals moved quietly through the home, even climbing the stairs, visiting shared spaces as well as people in their own rooms, including those being cared for in bed. Residents (who the home fondly refers to as family members) were offered carrots to feed them and were able to spend time stroking them.

A raffle was also held as part of the day, with first, second and third prizes. The first prize was a large Easter hamper put together by the home’s administrator, Tracey. In total, around £70 was raised, with tickets supported not only within the home but also by relatives, who took a book of tickets out into the local community.

The fun continued to the next day with a visit from Ranntastic Toe Tappers, who regularly come into the home to deliver music and movement sessions. Their sessions are designed to encourage gentle movement, support social interaction with familiar songs. Easter bunny ears were handed out, and people joined in in their own way, whether that was singing along or moving to the music.
