Monmouth Care Home Hosts Teddy Bear’s Picnic in Homes Gardens

Family members (residents) at Gibraltar Nursing Home in Monmouthshire recently enjoyed a Teddy Bear’s Picnic, spending a sunny afternoon together in two of the home’s outdoor spaces.

Beech Garden, home to the greenhouse ‘Chill Zone’, colourful wildflower beds and outdoor seating, and Fernlea’s welcoming decking area filled with plants and flowers, were transformed for the occasion, giving family members the choice of where they wanted to spend the afternoon enjoying the activities and sunshine.

Teddy bears were hidden amongst the trees, flower beds and garden displays, creating a trail for family members to discover as they explored the spaces.

Picnic blankets and tables were laid out, afternoon tea was served and teddy bear ears were ready for wear for those who wanted to! Some family members brought along their own favourite teddy bears, adding to the atmosphere as everyone gathered together to enjoy homemade treats, cups of tea and a sing-along featuring familiar songs.

The home’s gardens are used every day as an extension of home, giving family members different places to relax, socialise, enjoy nature and spend time with those around them. Events like the Teddy Bear’s Picnic make the most of these spaces, encouraging people to get outdoors and enjoy the simple pleasures of being together in nature.

For some people living with a Dementia or on a cognitive journey, soft toys and treasured objects can become important objects of attachment, providing reassurance and comfort. They can help reduce anxiety, encourage conversation, reminiscence, and help people feel safe and connected.

Team member Sally shared, ‘It was a truly lovely afternoon that brought everyone together, with the simple joy of spending time outdoors with our teddy bears! It was very special.’
