Residents of Catherine House Care Home, fondly known as family members, recently headed out to Lacock Whitehall Garden Centre to start getting ready for Christmas. They set out with plans to shop for Christmas decorations, taking their time to browse the festive displays enjoying engagement with the local community.

One resident, Maureen, was immediately struck by the first display and couldn’t help but remark, “amazing!” Stephen, also equally impressed, chimed in, “this is so good, what a great day out, thanks, ladies!” – a warm nod to volunteer Jan and team member Becky for making the trip with them.

Philip shared, “I’m glad I have today. It would have been a shame to spend it indoors.” Both Alan and Philip, who are on their own Dementia journeys, were grateful for the opportunity to enjoy the day as the festive decorations provided a rich sensory experience, with the lights, colours, and textures. Philip found joy in being helpful, eagerly assisting Alan in his wheelchair throughout the visit and appreciating the chance to support him.

After taking in the festive displays, they all made their way to Toby Carvery for a spot of lunch. Reflecting on the day, Philip, Stephen, and Malcolm all enthusiastically agreed it had been a success. Maureen, with her signature chuckle, added, “well, I’ve certainly enjoyed the chocolate fudge cake.”
Each family member bought a Christmas decoration to take back home and add to their tree, bringing a touch of individuality to the festive celebrations.

For Catherine House, outings like this are a continuation of the lives residents have always lived, not an exception. The perception that moving into a care home means being confined indoors is far from the reality in the Somerset home. Residents are supported to carry on with the activities they’ve always enjoyed, within reason, ensuring life remains as fulfilling and engaging as possible. Whether it’s exploring festive lights and displays at a garden centre or enjoying other meaningful experiences, these outings help residents stay connected to their community and maintain a sense of normality and purpose in everyday life.
