There’s something magical about the Shepton Mallet Carnival, and this year, residents from Catherine House Care Home in Frome, were right there to enjoy it. With the sky lit up by spectacular floats and the air filled with music and dance, Catherine House residents, fondly referred to as family members, had the best seats in town to soak up the carnival magic. For Stephen, the event held special meaning, it’s been about 30 years since he last attended a carnival. In past years, Stephen enjoyed going to the Wells and Glastonbury carnivals with his brother, making this night an extra meaningful one.

Crowds showed up in huge numbers for the latest parade, put on to entertain people from all over the county. For the Somerset care home’s family members, who were wrapped-up and cosy with a hot dog in hand, all that was left to do was enjoy the entertainment provided by the flashy floats that drifted past.

Kim, the home’s Administrator, shared that Janet couldn’t stop talking about the evening: “Today, Janet hasn’t stopped chatting about how much she enjoyed last night. She said, ‘The lights on one of the floats were so bright, the heat from them was keeping us warm, so I wasn’t cold!’” For Janet and the others, the evening wasn’t just about the lights and music, it was about feeling part of a community and sharing an amazing experience with many others.

At Catherine House, bringing moments like this to family members is all part of creating a happy and connected life. By joining in community events like the Shepton Mallet Carnival, Catherine House Care Home support and encourage family members to engage with parts of the community that are important to them; retaining their independence, self-esteem and group solidarity.
