Family members (residents) at Gibraltar Nursing Home in Monmouth enjoyed an afternoon of cheese tasting in the home’s Pillars restaurant as part of National Cheese Day.

Tables were dressed with golden runners and filled with chopping boards and platters of cheeses from countries around the world, with each variety displayed alongside a small flag representing where it came from! Family members sampled everything from French camembert and goat’s cheese to stilton, mature cheddars and Wensleydale. There were also soft cheeses with herbs and garlic for those for those with difficulties swallowing so that everyone could enjoy the experience.
The cheeses were accompanied by a selection of olives, grapes, apples, chutneys, breadsticks and crackers, allowing family members to mix and match different flavours throughout the afternoon. A range of refreshments was also available, including glasses of ruby port and lemonade.

The afternoon was a lovely opportunity to bring together family members from across the different households within the home to try something new and share time together.
Gibraltar Nursing Home is made up of six smaller households, each thoughtfully designed to support people living with similar care needs while still encouraging opportunities for connection and shared experiences across the wider home community.
Anthony, who initially said he did not like olives, changed his mind after watching team member Tracy enjoy one and decided to give them another try for himself. To everyone’s amusement, he ended up eating the entire dish!

Some family members were interested in hearing a bit about where all the cheeses came from, while others just enjoyed the atmosphere and eating and chatting together.
It was also wonderful to see so many people joining in throughout the afternoon, including relatives visiting loved ones for the day, who decided to take part in the cheese tasting too. Members of the team also came in on their days off to be part of the event, alongside a retired team member who wanted to join in with the celebrations.
Gibraltar is always happy to welcome relatives, loved ones and people who have previously lived or worked at the home to take part in events like these, helping the home remain connected to the wider community and maintaining relationships that continue long after someone’s role or stay at the home may have changed.

Team member Tracy shared, ‘Events like these are a great way to spark curiosity and share new experiences while getting something tasty out of it. Everyone had a brie-lliant time!’
