This year, Gibraltar Nursing Home proudly celebrated VE Day, marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe and the end of the Second World War. The day provided a special opportunity for us to remember the incredible bravery, sacrifice, and resilience of those who served, while also bringing our community together in tribute.

To honour this significant milestone, Gibraltar Nursing Home hosted a day of commemorative events designed to reflect, connect, and celebrate. The afternoon brought smiles and stories as residents (known as ‘family members’) enjoyed traditional fish and chips served wrapped in ‘chip paper’ – this simple touch echoed the wartime days, when old newspaper wrapped meals out of necessity, now transformed into a warm reminder of resilience and shared history. Alongside the fish and chips came a charming spread of wartime-inspired treats, sandwiches, scones and cakes, served with tea and traditional drinks, bringing back the flavours and comfort of a bygone era.

Later in the afternoon, the care home came alive with music and laughter during a lively session of live entertainment by Bev Couzens, before winding down with a traditional afternoon tea, where family members, relatives and members of the wider community were warmly welcomed to take part. It was a time to relax, reconnect, and simply enjoy each other’s company, tea in hand and smiles all around.

Adding to the spirit of the occasion, we were delighted to welcome guests from the community, including representatives from the Royal British Legion, the local cadets, and Mayor David Evans, all of whom took time to meet our family members and pay their respects. Having them with us was a heartfelt reminder of the lasting respect and gratitude we feel for our veterans.
