An autumn fair at Frome Nursing Home in Somerset welcomed the local community to join those living and working at the home together for an afternoon of music, stalls and a few unexpected moments, including a first-time experience on the swings for one pleased resident (fondly referred to as a family member).
Held in the grounds of the care home, the home’s Autumn fair made the most of a sunny but blustery day. Some family members wrapped themselves in blankets to keep warm while listening to the live singer, Amanda Young from ‘Vintage Lace Entertainment’. Others wandered between the stalls, stopping for a look at the tombola, sweet cart and freshly prepared barbecue food.
Among the first to venture outside was family member Polly, who spotted a set of swings. Having apparently never been on a swing before, Polly was keen to give it a try and asked if she could have a go! With team member Ankita joining her for company, Polly spent her time on the swing smiling and singing. Family member Margaret, who had come outside with Polly, was less convinced by the idea and decided she would rather keep her feet firmly on the ground.
Elsewhere, the tombola stall was attracting plenty of attention, particularly from family member Pauline, who had her eye on a floral vase. Unfortunately, her winning ticket revealed a children’s storybook instead. However, a discreet swap of tickets when nobody was looking meant Pauline went home with the vase she had been hoping for after all.
Family member Peter also found himself with a job for the afternoon. After stopping at the sweet cart, he joined Home Administrator Lesley behind the tombola stall to help serve visitors. The pair shared a cup of tea to keep warm, with Peter offering Lesley some of his sweets during their busy shift.
The barbecue and cupcakes proved popular, and several team members brought their own families along to spend time at the fair.
Lesley described the afternoon as a “great event” and shared “Although we have held events like this before, I think some of the family members were quite surprised to see something different outside, and they liked having a look around the stalls and chatting with new people,” she said.
