At Catherine House Care Home in Somerset, maintaining a sense of home goes beyond just daily routines, it’s about involvement, purpose, and shared experiences. Recently, when maintenance man Paul invited two residents, fondly referred to as family members, to help with ongoing projects around the home, they were happy to lend a hand.
One family member, a former retail assistant at B&M, was particularly interested when he learned they would be heading to B&Q for painting supplies. Having worked at the opposite store to the one they were visiting, he enjoyed reminiscing about his time there. He also shared his experience as a tarmac layer, showing he wasn’t a stranger to hands-on work.

Paul has plenty of other projects underway at Catherine House, including painting the one of the bathrooms, and clearing foliage along the side of the home and will be involving any family members that wish to be involved.
In addition to Paul’s maintenance role, he also runs the Gardening Club on a weekly basis, rotating between the home’s three households so that each gets a session every three weeks. The care home believes in creating a supportive and person-centred environment that truly feels like home. Whilst one whole community, the home is thoughtfully designed into three smaller households, each catering to different stages of life’s journey. This approach allows the home to provide the right level of care and engagement for each family member.
Each space is uniquely designed to meet the specific needs of its family members, creating familiar and homely surroundings that promote independence, dignity and a true sense of belonging. While each household has its own character, our entire home remains connected as one, with a strong sense of community at its heart.
