“The biggest laugh of the day was most definitely when family member Pat, said the red cars are passion wagons!”

The residents of Catherine House Care Home, who are fondly refer to as family members, recently made an exciting visit to the Haynes Motor Museum. Nestled in Sparkford near Yeovil in Somerset, this fantastic museum contains over 400 cars and motorcycles, along with an impressive collection of automobilia. The museum offered the perfect setting for family members to engage with the rich history of automobiles, offering a feeling of nostalgia from the iconic vehicles and vintage exhibits.

The day was also filled with a lot of laughter with one family member Stephen jokingly trying to figure out which car could fit in Jan’s handbag, one of the care home’s volunteers. Another family member, Malcolm, was especially touched by the visit, sharing that it brought back fond memories of his childhood. He enjoyed creating Frottage art of the cars and was thrilled to bring home some car badges from the shop. Malcolm also admired a quirky Airstream caravan, which had been converted into a refreshment wagon. The biggest laugh of the day was most definitely when family member Pat, said the red cars are passion wagons!

Trips out into the community are essential to increasing social and emotional health, it can also provide structure and aid cognitive function. This aligns with the care home’s philosophy of promoting a continuation of life for their residents. If one lived at home for example, engaging with the community would be a normal part of daily life. We aim to foster this continuity, ensuring that even when living in a care home, residents continue to experience the richness of community involvement.
