Thumbs up for the captain! Residents, warmly referred to as family members, at Catherine House Care Home recently enjoyed a scenic boat trip along the Bradford-on-Avon canal.
The trip turned into a wildlife spotting adventure, with one family member, Pat, having a keen moment of wanting to get into the water to swim with the ducks, but decided to admire a heron instead with friend and fellow family member, Stephen.
Barbara shared a wonderful moment with us, recalling her fond memories of walking along the canal path with her husband and children, followed by visits to see her son Julian at Vixy’s Café – owned by her granddaughter Victoria. Julian quite generously treated everyone on the trip from the care home to a lunch of freshly made rolls, cake and ice cream.
The canal boat ride showed how community engagement and day trips can be so important for anyone’s wellbeing, but especially for someone living in a care home. Just as we would if living at home, popping out for the day at the weekend, this is what continuation of life truly is – the normalcy of everyday activities, not just a one-off event.
