A residential care home near Sidmouth brought a touch of wellness by turning their Westhill Lounge into a spa experience, treating the ladies to an afternoon of pampering, and bubbly.
Sundial Care Home, based in Tipton St John, organised a ladies’ day where residents, who are fondly referred to as ‘family members’, enjoyed an afternoon tea stand filled with cakes and nibbles alongside glasses of bubbly with strawberries, while sitting back and relaxing.
Team members enjoyed the afternoon just as much as the ladies, helping with manicure stations, face masks and hand massages, while joining in with the conversations. Also lending a hand were volunteers who have built close connections with Sundial through their loved ones and continue to be part of life at the home.
One shared: “Well done Sue and helpers, they all enjoyed it, the cakes and bubbly went down well. The hand massages were beneficial for all.”
For many ladies, taking pride in their appearance and enjoying a little pampering is part of who they are, something that doesn’t change with age or moving into a care home. Whether it was getting ready for a special occasion, visiting the hairdresser or spending an afternoon with friends, these rituals have often been as much about the social aspect as the pampering itself.
The team at the east devon care home continue to create an atmosphere where family members are encouraged to get involved in social activities that reflect their different interests and personalities. The spa day was just one example, with the home also running a gardening club, arts and crafts sessions and regular community trips, known as ‘van adventures’.
Each offers an opportunity to support wellbeing through personal interests, social connections and the continuation of everyday life. They also give family members the chance to build friendships with one another and the team members they spend their days with.
