Residents from Catherine House Care Home recently boarded the Somerset home’s minibus for a trip to Weston-Super-Mare. One resident, who the home refers to as family member, Keith, was urging the care home’s Activities Coordinator, to ‘hurry up!’ in excitement, keen to get on the road to the coast.
For another family member, Peter, the trip was a chance to visit somewhere he could not recall ever having been. After a stop for a drink in Churchill, the group continued towards Weston and the seafront.
Once they found a parking spot, it was time to consider the most pressing question: which fish and chip shop to choose for lunch!
With several shops to compare, the conversation turned to how much prices had changed since they were younger. They reminisced on paying a shilling for “scrumps”, the scraps of batter that came with a visit to the chip shop.
Among those making the most of the afternoon was David, who had settled into a sunny spot and remarked that he could happily sit there all day. He later suggested that the others could leave him at the chip shop, an idea fellow Catherine House family member Royston was quick to agree with.
A few starlings gathered for scraps from lunch, though there was little to spare once everyone had finished their fish and chips. After lunch, the group had ice cream, although Peter took a slightly different approach. Rather than choosing between fish and chips or ice cream first, he decided to have them together, dipping his chips into his ice cream.
When rain began to fall, the group headed back to the minibus. On the drive home, they enjoyed watching the passing scenery and thanked Sharon and Paul for the day out.
The following morning, David had another destination in mind. Speaking with Sharon, he asked whether a steam train trip could be arranged, remembering the journeys he used to make as a child.
The home is now looking at organising this trip for David and any other family members who would like to come along. Outings like these give those who live at the home the chance to stay connected with the local community, while spending time with others who share their interests, much like heading out with a neighbour or friend when living at home.
