Reaching 100 is something fewer than 1 in 4,000 people in the UK will ever do. On Friday 27 March, Barbara reached that milestone and spent the day exactly how she would have wanted, surrounded by people, conversation, music, and more chocolate than usual!
Her 100th birthday was marked with a celebration shaped around what matters to her. The team dressed in purple (her favourite colour, inspired by her love of Cadbury’s) something made possible by the home’s approach of not wearing uniforms, helping to create a more familiar, homely environment. Residents (who the home fondly refers to as family members) and relatives spent time with her throughout the day, many wearing party hats and joining in the celebration.
There were touches of Strictly Come Dancing throughout the day. Home Manager Sarah Butfield said: “Barbara lights up when Strictly Come Dancing is on. She’ll sit watching closely, waving her arms along to the music and admiring the dresses, it’s something she really connects with.”
Among the gifts was a Cadbury teddy bear, which quickly became a favourite. Barbara’s reaction said everything. She was visibly delighted, with a huge smile on her face as she held onto it.

At one point, Barbara opened her birthday card from the King and Queen, surrounded by family and friends. It was a quiet, emotional moment within the day. Sarah says: “It was such a special moment to see her open it with everyone around her. You could really feel how much it meant.”
During the celebration, a photograph of Barbara as a young woman, was displayed around the room. It became a natural talking point, drawing people into that part of her story. Barbara loved the photograph so much she asked for it to be placed outside her bedroom door, where it now hangs.
But what stood out most was not the milestone itself. It was how much she enjoyed it. A day built around the things she knows, chocolate, music, conversation, and being with people. It’s a reminder that even at 100, those things still matter.
